Singer Lady Gaga has booted media mogul Oprah Winfrey off the top spot of Forbes magazine’s list of most powerful celebrities.

It’s an impressive feat; just three years ago the 25-year-old (born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta) was an unknown underground performer.

“Gaga is there not just because of the $90 million she earned with a monster tour, but also because of her 32 million Facebook fans and 10 million Twitter followers – aka Little Monsters – who helped move 1 million digital downloads of her recent single Born This Way in only five days,” said Forbes.

“They’re also happy to buy the MAC makeup, Monster headphones and Virgin Mobile phones she features in her videos.”

Winfrey moved into second place from last year’s top position. Although she earned about three times more than Gaga, she was seen as being less influential in the social media realm.

Seventeen-year-old pop teen idol Justin Bieber rounds out the top three, “buoyed by strong press coverage and social media presence, including 25 million Facebook friends”.

The top five also includes U2 in fourth place and Elton John at number five.
