Saudi Arabia has issued orders for “gays and tomboys” to be barred from government schools and universities.

This is in an effort to “prevent the spread” of homosexuality and “unacceptable behaviour.”

Emirates247.com quoted the Arabic language daily newspaper Sharq as reporting that the feared Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice has been tasked with enforcing the orders.

“Instructions have been issued to all public schools and universities to ban the entry of gays and tomboys and to intensify their efforts to fight this phenomenon, which has been promoted by some websites,” the commission said.

It remains unclear who issued the orders to the commission.

The report added that if gay and tomboy students can show that they have been “corrected” and “have stopped such practices” they will be allowed to return to school.

Homosexuality is illegal in Saudi Arabia and is punishable with imprisonment, corporal punishment and even the death penalty.

Earlier this year, a 30-year-old man was arrested by religious police in Saudi Arabia for using his Facebook profile to meet other men.
