The Archbishop of Ouagadougou, Philippe Ouedraogo, has warned that gay marriage will destroy the family, thereby destroying Africa and the world.

Fasozine.com reported that the Archbishop made the statement, which is in line with current Catholic doctrine, during the Diocesan annual Catholic pilgrimage at the Our Lady of Yagama Cathedral in Burkina Faso on Sunday.

“Today, the family is attacked because we want to promote gay marriage at the expense of the family. For us, the point of reference remains the Bible,” said Ouedraogo.

“Genesis tells us that God created man and woman. It is the couple prototype. This is the starting point, so as Christians, we have no other symbols other than that.”

He went on to add: “Therefore, it is necessary to protect and defend the family. If we demolish the family, we demolish society. If we demolish the family, we destroy our Africa and our world…”

The Archbishop’s words echo those of Pope Benedict XVI, who recently announced his resignation. The Pontiff has, during his papacy, repeatedly asserted that same-sex marriage is unnatural and will lead to the end of humanity.

While Burkina Faso has no laws outlawing private same-sex sexual acts, the US Department of State reported in 2011 that LGBT people in the West African country face “societal discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity”.
