The family of Leo Govender, a 38-year-old man from Durban, is in mourning after the search for the missing man’s whereabouts ends in tragedy.

Govender was last seen by his family when he left his home in Cowies Hill on February 9th, using an e-hailing service. They reported him missing the following day after he failed to return home.

It is believed that Govender, who worked for Estée Lauder South Africa, went to the Pride of Durban club on Joe Slovo Street in the city centre with a colleague and at some point left the venue.

A missing person’s case was opened at the Pinetown SAPS and was followed by a social media campaign by his desperate family to try to find him, including offering a reward for any information that could help locate him.

On Thursday, Govender’s family confirmed that they had learned that he had been killed in a car accident, although few details were disclosed.

“It is extremely sad news about Leo. We are devastated and extremely sad. I know all of you out there will be as devastated as I am. Thank you so much, each and everyone, for helping with the search,” his brother Wayne posted on Facebook.

“We will miss his loving presence,” said his family in a statement. “It’s a difficult time for the family, and we thank you for the love and support. Family has requested privacy at this time, and funeral arrangements will be communicated.”

Police said they were investigating a case of culpable homicide related to the accident that claimed Govender’s life.
