Here Are LGBTQ-Friendly Public Health Clinics in Gauteng

Several government facilities in Gauteng have been trained to be LGBTQ-friendly clinics
Following the closure of several sexual health clinics that served the LGBTIQ+ community due to US government funding cuts, many queer South Africans have had to start to rely on public health clinics for HIV and related services.
Too many of us, however, know what it feels like to sit in a waiting room dreading how we’ll be treated—or to walk away from a clinic without the help we needed because of stigma, judgement, or outright discrimination. For queer communities, especially those most affected by HIV, this can make getting life-saving care feel like an uphill battle.
Within the health system, LGBTIQ+ are often categorised into a group known as “key populations”, which includes sex workers, men who have sex with men (MSM), people who use drugs, and transgender individuals. These communities face a higher risk of HIV, marginalisation and exclusion.
In Gauteng, a number of public health facilities run by the Gauteng Department of Health have taken steps to become more inclusive and affirming. Staff at these clinics have been trained to understand and respect the unique needs of LGBTQ+ people and other key populations,
What Are KP-Friendly Clinics?
Key population (KP) friendly clinics are better equipped to provide sensitive and inclusive healthcare services to marginalised groups. These facilities prioritise non-judgemental, respectful care tailored to the needs of those most at risk.
Key Features of KP-Friendly Clinics
Sensitised Staff
Healthcare workers receive sensitisation training to reduce discriminatory attitudes and improve understanding of the unique needs of key populations.
Non-Judgemental Environment
These clinics aim to create a welcoming and accepting space where individuals feel safe to seek healthcare without fear of stigma or judgement.
Tailored Services
Services are specifically designed for key populations, including HIV prevention and STI treatment.
