The 2026 Cape Town Pride Parade will be remembered as a powerful moment, where celebration met purpose in the streets of Cape Town.
Alongside the colour and festivity, a renewed sense of urgency and visibility pulsed through the crowd on Saturday, 28 February.
Activists used the march to highlight the case of queer teen Kwakhanya Mhlanganisi, whose murder in Khayelitsha on the 3rd of December 2025, shook the city’s LGBTIQ+ community, as well as the still-unsolved 2024 assassination of Imam Muhsin Hendricks.
A standout moment was the return of the organisation Free Gender to Pride, whose presence brought vital focus to Black queer voices and experiences. Their participation added depth and meaning, reminding attendees that Pride is as much about protest as it is about joy.
In a sea of rainbow flags, their message rang clear: visibility matters, representation matters, and the fight for equality continues.
