Each year on March 31, the world observes the Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV), a time to celebrate the lives, achievements, and contributions of transgender people while raising awareness about the challenges they continue to face. Established in 2009 to counterbalance the overwhelming focus on violence in media narratives, the day shifts attention toward joy, resilience, and representation.

While it is a moment of pride and recognition, it also highlights the stark realities many transgender individuals encounter, including disproportionate levels of poverty, discrimination, and violence compared to cisgender people. Importantly, it acknowledges that visibility is complex, and not all trans people are able or willing to be visible due to safety and personal circumstances.

In recognition of this year’s theme, “True Power Beyond Visibility,” MambaOnline spoke to some of South Africa’s most prominent transgender women about what the day means to them.

These include Ilano Sky, a housemate from the sixth season of Big Brother Mzansi and the show’s first transgender participant; reality TV star, activist, and multi-award-winning media personality, Yaya Mavundla; and Celeste Makeup, a celebrated celebrity makeup artist.

Captured behind the scenes of a 2026 Trans Day of Visibility photo shoot, these proudly African trans women’s insights reflect a narrative of identity and strength, emphasising that while visibility matters, true power lies in self-acceptance, lived experience, and the ability to define one’s own story beyond societal expectations.
