Joburg’s queer community came to confess, connect, and dance the night away at The Confessional II on 26 June.
What happens when you combine pounding house music, a room full of queer people, and an invitation to anonymously reveal your deepest secrets?
You get the The Confessional II event, hosted at eight.thenightclub in Rosebank, where the dancefloor became more than just a place to move. It became a space for vulnerability, laughter, healing, and a reminder that everyone carries stories they rarely tell out loud.
The event lived up to its reputation as guests dropped anonymous confessions into the night’s collection, exposing on a screen everything from hidden crushes and family scandals to unforgettable drunken mishaps.
Some of the confessions shared with MambaOnline were surprisingly heartfelt.
“I have a crush on my best friend and he doesn’t even know it.”
Others ventured into territory that left people gasping.
“I slept with my cousin’s partner. I blame the alcohol.”
Family drama wasn’t off limits either.
“I am the reason my sister’s boyfriend broke up with her.”
And then there were the confessions that reminded everyone that embarrassment is perhaps the most universal human experience.
“After a drunk night with friends, I accidentally pooped on his parents’ bed. I was drunk, for goodness’ sake!”
The confessions kept coming throughout the night, each one anonymous, each one reminding attendees that beneath the confidence, glamour, and curated outfits, everyone is carrying something.
Yet The Confessional isn’t really about exposing people’s darkest moments. It’s about creating a space where queer people can let go, even if only for one evening.
As the music echoed through eight.thenightclub, strangers became friends, friends became chosen family, and confessions became conversation starters long after the lights came on.
But if The Confessional II proved anything, it’s that sometimes the most liberating thing you can do is simply tell the truth… even if nobody ever knows it was you.
