Apollo’s Taberna et Mixtarium in Linden, Johannesburg recently welcomed guests to an unforgettable media launch evening, offering a tantalising glimpse into what promises to be one of of the city’s most exciting new queer venues.
Apollo’s Taberna & Mixtarium is a vibrant community space where food, music, art and connection come together. Inspired by Apollo, the Greek and Roman god of music, healing, knowledge and celebration, the venue offers an environment built on inclusivity, creativity and exceptional hospitality.
Guests can enjoy fusion Spice Route cuisine with a strong Mediterranean influence, alongside a carefully curated selection of drinks in its restaurant and bar.

The evening’s highlight was the House of Tease burlesque showcase, a deliciously steamy celebration of queer performance art. Featuring everything from classic burlesque and draglesque to experimental queer acts, the show delivered glamour, sensuality and plenty of surprises.
Entertainment and Restaurant Manager Neil Hosken explained that the production was designed to showcase the breadth of local talent. “We’ve actually gathered all kinds of actors out of our community to be on stage with us, just to really show everything that the burlesque community has to offer in Johannesburg,” he said.

Apollo’s owner, Franco, described the venue as “a wonderful new queer space” created to bring people together through entertainment and community. “We do drag shows, we do burlesque shows, and we also encourage people to come and work with us. If you have a great idea for an event that you’d like to do, come and speak to us,” he said.

While Apollo’s hosts live music performances and stage events on selected dates throughout the year, it is also available for private functions, birthdays, social gatherings, art events and other special occasions. Whether you’re stopping in for a meal, drinks with friends or a unique cultural experience, Apollo’s aims to create a space where everyone feels welcome and inspired.
