Johannesburg’s LGBTQ+ community is invited to step back to the grassroots spirit of Pride at the Nostalgia Pride Picnic, taking place at Constitution Hill on Saturday, 31 October 2026.
Inspired by the Pride gatherings of the 1990s, when marches culminated in communal picnics at Zoo Lake, the event aims to bring people together through advocacy, visibility and shared joy, while keeping Pride rooted in community rather than commercialisation.
Hosted by House of Ditsie, As Founded and Constitution Hill, with support from the Thami Dish Foundation, the picnic promises a relaxed day of connection, with vendors selling goods on site.

What can you expect?
The Nostalgia Pride Picnic is a community-led advocacy initiative centred on inclusion, accessibility and collective joy.
Inspired by the grassroots Pride gatherings of the 1990s, it offers an opportunity to celebrate LGBTQ+ identity and visibility in a welcoming, communal setting.
Bring your picnic baskets, camping chairs, garden umbrellas, blankets and friends, and settle in for an afternoon on the lawns. Vendors will also be selling goods at the event.
What can you bring?
Organisers encourage attendees to bring their own picnic essentials and make themselves comfortable.
Please note: no glass items are permitted. This includes glass bottles, drinking glasses, jars and other glassware. Plastic bottles and containers, as well as cans, are allowed.
Bags may be checked at the entrance. If security finds glass items, you will be asked to leave them at the entrance or transfer their contents into a plastic container, if one is available. Organisers cannot accept responsibility for items left behind.
The policy is intended to protect guests and the venue from injuries caused by broken glass, particularly where people are sitting on the grass, walking or dancing barefoot.
Join the community
Whether you come for the advocacy, the nostalgia or simply the chance to spend time with fellow LGBTQ+ people and allies, the Nostalgia Pride Picnic offers a space to celebrate Pride through connection and collective joy.
Bring your besties, pack a picnic and be part of a Pride gathering that puts community first.
