Miss Drag South Africa is here!

Calling all drag artists and fans across the country! A national gay drag pageant is finally here.

Enigma von Hamburg, avid beauty queen and former Miss Gay Western Cape, recently launched her new venture, Miss Drag South Africa (PTY) Ltd, in Cape Town at Zero21 Social Club.

“This will be an annual national pageant where we will have finalists competing from all over South Africa,” said von Hamburg.

“Miss Drag South Africa will be more than just a beauty pageant or modelling competition, it will aim to espouse the Miss World motto ‘Beauty with a purpose’ and advocate the advancement of LGBTQA+ rights.”

She explained that the pageant will be a vehicle “to educate our communities, to respect and show tolerance towards people from diverse sexual orientation, cultural, religious and racial backgrounds”.

Von Hamburg added: “I am of the opinion that deconstructing and breaking down the barriers of shame and intolerance are important steps in creating a just and equitable society.”

At the launch, she announced that the pageant will be held in a different province every year. The first event will take place on Saturday, 8 July 2017 in Cape Town.

If you would like to enter the pageant or to become a sponsor, email von Hamburg at missdragsouthafrica@evhempire.co.za. You can also download an entry form from the Miss Drag South Africa Facebook page.

Entries close in the first week of February.

  1. Not the first Miss Drag South Africa pageant. The same pageant was started in 1998 By Marius and Chris who owned the Bird cage Benoni.

  2. One needs to do proper research when claiming any “first” of its kind. I was in the audience the night Natasha won and also with other Miss Drag South Africa competitions. Those past winners are part of the LGBT history and should be even asked to be present at the new pageant. As an avid pageant supporter I am glad its back but do it the right way. Good Luck

  3. Okay I soooooooooo want to entre this competition just don’t really know how to guys you gots to help out….
