Triarc, South Africa’s LGBT financial and insurance service provider, was one of the sponsors of last month’s Cape Town Pride. They caught up with some of the participants in the parade and street after-party to find out what Pride means to them. Using a word like ‘faggot’ normalises hate. It’s not okay

Not only are Die Antwoord famously attention seeking, but their personas – on stage and online – are just that, caricatures of the real people standing behind them and not meriting a response. These characters seem to make others hesitant to criticise but it was exactly this hesitance that was drawn on by Triangle Project […]

The indignities of ‘playing doctor’

No one likes to go to the doctor. No one leaps out of bed, excited by the prospect of sitting in an airless reception room with snivelling, miserable people who look much too contagious to be mingling with the general public.  No one enjoys shooting the breeze with their doctor so much that they cancel […]

When will it end? Wedding venues continue to snub gay couples

Wedding venues for hire to the public continue to turn away loving same-sex couples. The most recent case involves the Rosebank Union Church in Sandton. The theme for the 37th year of Mardi Gras was ‘Passion’ and that’s what the participants brought to the Parade. Members of the LGBTQI community […]

Some of the nicest people I know are homophobes…

I was recently invited to debate the ongoing issue of wedding venues turning away same-sex couples on the Cliff Central online radio channel. The experience left me a little bewildered by some of the assumptions that were thrown around. The discussion focused on a recent incident in which a gay couple was refused service by […]
