JOB: PRIMARY HEALTH CARE NURSE

The Pretoria-based LGBT organisation OUT is looking someone to fill the position of a Primary Health Care Nurse.

OUT-Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgender (LGBT) Well-being is a progressive Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) working towards ensuring the rights of LGBT people, and is based in Pretoria/Tshwane. OUT provides direct health and mental health services and programmes, conducts research and implements mainstreaming and advocacy programmes.

OUT is currently developing a Prevention Initiative for Sexual Minorities (PRISM Project). The PRISM Project is a joint programme between the Schorer Foundation (in the Netherlands) and 17 organisations in 9 countries. The Project is funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

OUT seeks a Primary Health Care Nurse to initiate, develop, coordinate, implement and monitor a VCT Clinic and Wellness Centre. The Primary Health Care Nurse will work closely with the OUT Sexual Health Manager, PRISM Project Co-ordinator and the Community Centre Co-ordinator.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Be able to initiate, develop, coordinate, implement, and monitor VCT Clinic and Wellness Centre activities;
  • This may include (but are not limited to) activities, such as VCT, General Physical Examinations, STI diagnosis and treatment, Treatment Literacy, Pap Smears, Referral and follow-up;
  • Maintain confidential patient files;
  • Maintain clinic stats and track patient trends;
  • Assist in the planning and implementing of sexual health workshops;
  • Assist in planning and implementing of mobile VCT services;
  • Analyse and report on project outputs;
  • Monitor and report on financial expenditure;
  • Attend meetings with stakeholders;
  • Co-ordinate monthly project team meetings; and
  • Present at case presentations.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • Good knowledge, and extensive experience, in coordinating and implementing primary health care clinic activities;
  • Good knowledge of health issues facing Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender communities;
  • As a minimum a certificate or diploma in Primary Health Care Nursing;
  • Proof of registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Registered Nurse, Midwife, Community Nurse, Psychiatric Nurse and Primary Health Care Nurse;
  • Abilities in the following domains:

    • Good writing skills;
    • Good command of English;
    • Be an analytical thinker;
    • Good interpersonal skills, ability to work in a team and to work with and coordinate people from diverse backgrounds;
    • Good computer skills (eg: excel, word, powerpoint, outlook);
    • Be able to work independently and with a professional work ethic;
  • Ability to contribute to decision-making regarding project development and execution;
  • Ability to systematically document developments and its impact;
