ONLY OPENLY GAY AT OLYMPIC WINS GOLD

Advertorial

Matthew Mitcham, the only openly gay male athlete at the Beijing Olympics, has won a gold medal for diving.

The 20 year old Australian won the medal in the men’s 10 metre platform diving competition on Saturday.

His dive in the final, a back two and a half somersault with two and a half twists, was described as “sensational” and “fantastic.”

It earned 112.10; the highest score ever earned in diving at the Olympics.

Mitcham beat out the other leading contender, Zhou Luxin from China, who had earlier been in the lead.

He came out as gay in May this year in an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald. He is said to be the first openly gay athlete to represent Australian at the Olympics.

The 2008 Olympic Games came to a close on Sunday. Only ten openly gay or lesbian athletes were reported to have participated in the games.
