NG KERK RE-EMPLOYS FIRED GAY MUSIC TEACHER

Advertorial

An Eastern Cape branch of the NG Kerk has employed a music teacher who won a court battle against the Pretoria branch for firing him for being gay.

In August 2008, the Moreleta Park NG Kerk (Dutch Reformed Church) was ordered to apologise and pay damages to Johan Strydom for firing him in 2005 from the church’s arts academy because of his sexuality.

Now, the Rapport newspaper reports that Strydom, who moved to Jeffreys Bay, has been offered his job back, but this time at the NG Kerk in Kareedouw in the Eastern Cape.

While Strydom received an apology and R87 000 in damages last year, he told Rapport that “It was rather the hand a small community like Kareedouw extended to me that rekindled my faith in the NG Kerk and in people.”

Speaking on Talk Radio 702 last year, Strydom said: “I am a homosexual Christian and I don’t have a problem with that.”
