Steven Monjeza and Tiwonge Chimbalanga
The Associated Press has reported that the gay couple jailed on charges of homosexuality in Malawi has been found guilty.
The news agency said Chief Resident Magistrate Nyakwawa Usiwa found Steven Monjeza (26) and Tiwonge Chimbalanga (20) guilty of unnatural acts and gross indecency on Tuesday.
It is unclear when they will be sentenced but this could be as early as later today. Under Malawi law they could be jailed for up to 14 years.
The men were arrested after getting engaged in a public ceremony last December. They have been held in squalid conditions at Chichiri Prison in Blantyre without bail since.
The couple’s arrest has been condemned by governments and human rights groups around the world.

Disgraceful. it is a disgrace that ANY country are allowed to get away with something like this. It is a disgrace that nobody has more power other than to “condemn” it. It is a disgrace that those that HAVE the power are absolutely mum on it! These poor men did nothing but fell in love with each other. They did not hurt anyone with that love, and for that they will spend years in jail, in fact they have already served half a year. It is things like this that will continue to keep Africa in the dark ages. Why did the world’s greats like the UK, US, and the countries where gay marriage is legal, INCLUDING this excuse for a government we have, that brag that they are all about “human rights” not stand up and put some pressure on Malawi to release these men? Put sanctions on them or something!
Disgusting. Why are we not protesting about this disgusting behaviour?
