SAMA-award winning singer and 2002 Idols finalist Melanie Lowe has announced the date of her wedding to her new fiancée, Gaye Martin.

Set to take place on the 5th of March in Knysna, Lowe’s publicists said that “the wedding represents the first celebrity, lesbian, same-sex wedding in South Africa as Melanie puts aside her fear of controversy and follows her heart”.

Lowe made waves in the conservative local music industry when she came out as lesbian to the public in May 2009. At the time, she also announced her engagement to a woman, whom she has since broken up with.

Lowe described her new partner as “her guardian angel” explaining that Martin was there for her after the break up and that she is more than ready to walk down the aisle with her.

“We are both great lovers of nature and we are spiritual people, said Lowe. “We chose a remote, beautiful beach that is very special to us for our ceremony and we are going to be surrounded by a small, intimate group of 40 of the closest people in our lives.

“Our reception is under a forest of ancient Milkwood trees on a nearby island. It is going to be the most beautiful day and I can’t wait to marry her!”

After a brief honeymoon Lowe will return to adding the finishing touches to her new album.
