Pop star Katy Perry leads the nominations in the 2011 MTV Music Video Awards (VMA) with an incredible nine nominations for three music videos.

MTV announced the nominees for this year’s fourteen VMA categories on Wednesday. The awards are set to take place on Sunday, August 28.

Perry’s nominations for the gay-affirming video for Firework include “Video of the Year” and “Best Female Video“.

In October last year, Perry dedicated the video, featuring two boys kissing, to victims of homophobic bullying.

She also received nominations for “Best Pop Video” for Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.), and “Best Special Effects” for her futuristic chart-topping hit and this year’s current top selling digital song in the US, E.T. featuring Kanye West.

Following the success of 21 as the year’s biggest selling album to date in the US, Adele has garnered an impressive seven VMA nominations for her soulful smash hit, Rolling In the Deep.

Kanye West also racked up seven nominations for his collaboration with Perry, as well as for his artistic videos All of The Lights and Power.

Silky, smooth singer / songwriter Bruno Mars is up for four coveted Moonman awards. Beyoncé, Eminem, Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj, and Thirty Seconds To Mars, have three VMA nominations apiece.

Beastie Boys, Chris Brown, Pitbull, Lil Wayne, as well as first time VMA nominees, Tyler, The Creator, Foster the People and Manchester Orchestra all have two nods each for Moonmen this year.
