ANGER OVER POLICE RAID ON INDIAN GAY PARTY
Bobby Darling, a well-known trans actress in India, has been arrested after police raided a gay party in Mumbai.
Police in the Oshiwara area swooped on the party after they received complaints about loud music in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The party’s organisers, DJ and guests – 133 people in total – were arrested on various charges, including indecent behaviour.
Police also said that the party – which apparently charged an entry fee – was not licensed to serve alcohol or play music.
“The team found that those at the party were behaving in an indecent manner as defined under the Bombay Police Act so they were detained and asked to pay a fine of Rs 1,200 each”, said Pratap Dighavkar, deputy commissioner of police.
Darling, however, told The Times of India: “There was no indecent behaviour. There were people from the LGBT community and drag queens, but it was like a regular party. There were drinks and dancing, like at any party. I didn’t know there was no permission for the party or the alcohol.”
She also told The Hindustan Times: “I doubt the police would have taken such action had it not been a gay party.”
The guests and organisers were released on bail or after paying fines.
