One of the heads of a residence at Stellenbosch University, near Cape Town, is under fire for allegedly making an anti-gay comment to first year students.

According to The Times, Michiel Engelbrecht, house committee member of the male residence Dagbreek, told fellow students that he “was not a supporter of gays”.

The comment was made during a talk on sex and sexuality by the student group MOJO, which aims to “create a culture of critical thinking, awareness and tolerance” on campus.

Engelbrecht’s anti-gay comment was reported to have been met with applause.

MOJO has laid a complaint against Engelbrecht, stating that his comments were likely to influence the impressionable first year students.

“An impressionable young man, new to an environment and institution, sees his house committee (HK) members as agents of the university. They idolise the HK members as an emblem of what it means to be a ‘Matie’,” reads the complaint.

Engelbrecht says that his comment was taken out of context.

MOJO claims that its being “pressured from many angles to drop the complaint”. The university told The Times that it is investigating the complaint.
