Grammy-winning singer Bruno Mars has denied claims that he came out as gay on April Fools’ Day.

The reports first surfaced on the 2nd of April when CNN’s iReport blog posted that the 26-year-old had “come out” during a radio interview in Chicago.

“The timing is bad. I hadn’t realised it was April Fool’s Day, but it’s been pointed out to me, and I don’t want to go too public with this,” he was also quoted as saying.

The news in the report, titled Bruno Mars Comes Out of the Closet, quickly spread and became a trending topic on Twitter.

Mars’ representative later dismissed the claims as being “false” and “completely fabricated.”

The report was also removed from CNN.

Mars came to prominence in late 2010 with the release of his album Doo-Wops & Hooligans.

He was nominated for seven awards at the 53rd Grammys in 2011 where he won Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
