DISNEY CHANNEL DEBUTS 1ST GAY CHARACTERS
America’s Disney Channel has for the first time included LGBT characters in one of its shows.
On Sunday, an episode of the family sitcom Good Luck Charlie introduced a family headed by two lesbian mothers.
In the episode, lead characters Amy and Bob Duncan (Leigh-Allyn Baker and Eric Allan Kramer) arrange a play date for their young son Charlie (Mia Talerico) with a boy call Taylor.
The couple are confused because they met the boy’s mother separately and they each remember her having a different name.
When Taylor arrives, Amy and Bob together meet the two women, played by Lilli Birdsell and Desi Lydic, and realise the reason for their confusion.
Bob says to Amy, “Taylor has TWO moms,” to which she replies “nothing gets past you, Bob”.
The anti-gay conservative lobby group One Million Moms has urged its followers to write in to Disney protesting against the show’s LGBT inclusiveness.
“Just because something may be legal or because some are choosing a lifestyle doesn’t make it morally correct,” said the group in an e-mail before the show aired. “Disney should stick to entertaining instead of pushing an agenda. Disney decided to be politically correct versus providing family-friendly programming.”
Disney first announced plans to introduce the lesbian characters in June last year.
A spokesperson said at the time: “This particular storyline was developed under the consultancy of child development experts and community advisors. Like all Disney Channel programming, it was developed to be relevant to kids and families around the world and to reflect themes of diversity and inclusiveness.”
“One Million Moms”? One Million Mongs, more like.
