SOCHI GOOGLE DOODLE BACKS GAY EQUALITY

google_doodle_backs_gay_rights_sochi_olympic_openingGoogle has expressed its support for gay and lesbian rights with a sporty rainbow Google Doodle on the opening day of the Sochi Winter Olympics.

The logo graphic on the search engine’s landing page features illustrations of various winter sports on a rainbow background.

To highlight the hypocrisy of the International Olympic Committee’s choice of host nations with troubling human rights records, such as Russia, Google included a quote below the image from the Olympic Charter that reads:

“The practice of sport is a human right. Every individual must have the possibility of practicing sport, without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play.”

The rainbow doodle has appeared on international versions of the search engine, including on Google’s Russian site.

Since 1998, Google Doodles have been used to celebrate or mark special contemporary or historical occasions, figures and landmarks.

  1. Methinks the Russian president protests too much. How else do you explain the biggest phallic symbol in the history of Olympic sport lighting up the Sochi sky?! 🙂
