The new hit revival of The Rocky Horror Show scored three acting prizes at the 49th annual Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards at Cape Town’s Baxter Theatre on Sunday 16 March.

The event, as always, was a glamorous affair attended by the who’s who of the South African theatre scene. The MCs for the night were comedian Alan Committie and talk show host Africa Melane.

The onstage entertainment featured iconic performers Dorothy Masuka accompanied by guitarist Bheki Khoza, the Cape Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, the Ubuntu B-Boys, and an ensemble of dancers in a vibrant pantsula number choreographed by the former Artistic Director of Jazzart, Jackie Manyaapelo.

Winners Brendan van Rhyn (Best Lead Actor in a Musical – Frank-N-Furter in Rocky Horror), Angela Killian (Best Lead Actress in a Musical – Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard) and Craig Leo (Best Set Design for Voices Made Night) did our LGBT community very proud.

Neither van Rhyn nor Leo could attend the event but the beautiful Angela Killian was able to be there. Proudly, in her acceptance speech, she thanked her “loving and supportive wife”.

In addition to van Rhyn, Rocky Horror further won the Best Supporting Actor and Actress in a Musical or Music Theatre Show awards (Andrew Laubscher for Riff Raff and Daneel van der Walt as Magenta).

Also worth a mention is Fred Abrahamse and Marcel Meyer’s production of Tennessee Williams’s The Milk Train Doesn’t Stop Here Anymore for which Jennifer Steyn won the Best Performance by a Lead Actress in a Play for her role as Flora “Sissy” Goforth.

The panel of judges made their decisions after having viewed 84 productions staged in several venues in and around Cape Town. Each Fleur du Cap winner received a cheque for R15,000 and a beautiful silver medallion.
