For LGBTIQ+ people in the Vaal area of Gauteng and the Free State, Pride is a chance to be visible, connect with others and celebrate queer life in a region where discrimination, violence and struggles for acceptance remain part of many people’s realities.
This year, however, the Vaal’s Pride celebrations will take a slightly different route.
The 10th annual Vaal Pride celebration which typically takes place in September has been postponed to November, with the exact date still to be announced.
In the meantime, the Vaal LGBTI+ Pride Picnic will take place on 5 September 2026, creating an opportunity for the community to gather, reconnect and celebrate.
According to Nonkululeko “Nox” Mtshali, a Vaal Pride LGBTI Committee member, the picnic is intended to ensure that the postponement does not mean the community has to put its celebration on hold.
“Vaal LGBTI+ Pride is more than just an event; it is a celebration of our existence, our diversity, our resilience and our right to live openly and authentically,” Mtshali told MambaOnline.
A decade of Vaal Pride
The upcoming Pride milestone is significant for the Vaal LGBTIQ+ community, marking 10 years of annual Pride celebrations in the region.
“Reaching this milestone is a reflection of the strength and resilience of the Vaal LGBTIQ+ community and everyone who has contributed to building Pride in our region over the years,” she says.
“Pride creates a much-needed space where people can come together, feel seen, connect with one another and experience queer joy in a safe and affirming environment,” she says.
That need remains particularly important at a time when LGBTIQ+ communities continue to confront discrimination, violence and questions around visibility and acceptance.
“Having these spaces reminds our community that we belong, that our lives matter and that we deserve to celebrate ourselves,” Mtshali says.
Why the Pride celebration was postponed
The decision to postpone the main 10-year Pride celebration was driven by delayed resources, which the committee says made it difficult to deliver the milestone event at the scale originally envisioned.
Rather than cancelling community activities altogether, organisers opted to create a smaller opportunity for people to gather in September.
The picnic will focus less on a large-scale Pride programme and more on connection, relaxation and celebration.
“We want people to have fun, build relationships, share experiences and enjoy being themselves without judgement,” Mtshali explains.
While November will provide the opportunity for the Vaal to mark a decade of Pride in a bigger way, the September picnic is intended to keep that spirit alive in the meantime.
The committee is keen to emphasise that postponing the main celebration should not be interpreted as cancelling it.
“It means that we are taking the time to mobilise the resources we need to deliver the 10-year celebration that our community deserves,” says Mtshali.
‘We are still here’
For Mtshali, the message behind this year’s events is ultimately straightforward: queer people deserve joy.
“Our communities often have to spend so much time fighting for our rights, responding to violence and discrimination, advocating for safety and demanding visibility that we sometimes forget the importance of simply celebrating who we are,” she says.
The 10-year milestone also offers an opportunity to look to the past and the future at the same time, honouring the people and efforts that brought Vaal Pride to this point while creating a sense of possibility for the next generation.
“We want young queer people to know that there is a community that sees them, supports them and believes that they have a right to exist freely and authentically,” Mtshali says.
The Vaal LGBTI Pride Picnic takes place on Saturday 5 September 2026 at Beverly Hills Park & Gardens in Evaton West from 10:00 to 18:00.
