Following Friday’s powerful march, Soweto Pride continued on Saturday, 26 September, with a vibrant celebration at Kwalichaba Chesa Nyama, bringing the community together for an afternoon and evening dedicated to queer joy.
After a day of marching, speeches and calls for greater equality and safety, Saturday offered a different but equally important expression of Pride: the freedom to celebrate, dance, connect and simply enjoy being together.
The celebration was filled with colour, energy and plenty of dancing as LGBTQIA+ people, friends, families and allies gathered to mark another year of Soweto Pride.
Taking centre stage were MCs Pretty Ndie The MC and Chicken KwaNjomane, who kept the crowd entertained and on their feet throughout the evening. Their energy helped create an atmosphere where the celebration could unfold as a space for laughter, music, self-expression and community.
For many, Pride is not only about protesting discrimination or demanding that rights be respected. It is also about celebrating the lives, relationships, friendships and communities that continue to thrive despite the challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ people.
Saturday’s celebration reflected that spirit, with the crowd embracing the opportunity to let loose and enjoy the moment. The dance floor became a place where queer people could show up as themselves, surrounded by others who understand the importance of visibility and belonging.
The gathering showed what the fight for equality is ultimately about: creating a world where queer people can live openly and safely.
And there was certainly no shortage of joy!.
