Hundreds of LGBTI people took to the streets of Mumbai for the Indian city’s sixth Pride parade on Saturday, described as its biggest to-date.
The Times of India reported that the carnival style afternoon Mumbai Queer Azadi March included participants dressed in elaborate and colourful costumes.
This year’s event, in India’s most populous city, was also notable in that fewer people in the parade wore masks to avoid being identified.
“It shows that people are gaining confidence,” LGBTI rights activist Ashok Row Kavi told the newspaper.
The around 2,000 marchers wore rainbow colours and held up banners demanding equality.
The parade concluded a series of earlier Pride events such as a film festival, a play, a photographic exhibition and various parties.
LGBTI activists in India have urged the Supreme Court to confirm the repeal of the country’s anti-gay legislation.
The law, Section 377 of IPC (unnatural sex), was struck down by the Delhi High Court in 2009. The ruling, however, has been challenged in the Supreme Court, which is expected to issue its verdict this year.
