OIA CALLS FOR ‘HAPPY SNAPS’

The Out in Africa Gay & Lesbian Film Festival (OIA) and the Italian Institute of Culture are making a call for proposals for 8 to 10 minute lesbian and gay films.

The call is open to those who have some filmmaking experience, but who may not have yet had the opportunity to make a film.

A 15 day workshop in Cape Town, under the direction of Italian Filmmaker, Laura Muscardin, will run from Friday 15 to Friday 29 June 2007. The workshop includes script development, pre-production, the shoot and editing (to final mix).

Three or four people will be selected, on the basis of their proposal, to attend the workshop and make their film. Those who are selected for this incredible opportunity must be available for the duration of the Workshop.

According to OIA, scripts should be “simple”. For example, a narrative piece should not require large casts, complicated cinematography (no crane shots, no expensive locations) or copyrighted music, and should be contemporary (for wardrobe and make-up purposes).

Out In Africa say that they cannot provide travel expenses or accommodation for those who live outside of Cape Town.

They require a one page Synopsis and two page Treatment for a Queer film, narrative / fictional or documentary. The theme is “Happy Snaps” – positive, amusing gay and lesbian stories are required.

The deadline for entries is: Friday 11 May 2007. All applicants will be informed of the final selection by Friday 25th May 2007.

The finished films will be screened at the November 2007 Out in Africa Film Festival in Johannesburg and Cape Town and will be included in the Video Suitcase, for use at various Satellite Festivals around the country.
