TUTU: “DOING QUITE WELL”

Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, a vocal supporter of LGBT rights in Africa, has said that he is “doing quite well” despite the recurrence of his prostate cancer.

In response to a recent article in the London Times about his health, the Archbishop – who was award the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 – issued a statement saying that, “I am deeply touched by the expressions of concern and assurances of prayer for my recovery and I thank all concerned.”

While the London Times article seems to suggest that the recurrence of his prostate cancer is very recent, Tutu said that this was not the case:

“In fact I have been receiving hormonal treatment since early last year and doing quite well. But loving concern and prayer can never be superfluous. Thank you.”

According to his office the 75 year old Tutu is otherwise in good health and in the midst of a busy schedule including a current visit to London and trips to a number of European countries next month.

In the past he has endorsed the Out In Africa Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, the Johannesburg 2010 Gay Games Bid, often vocalised support for LGBT rights, and slammed conservative members of the Anglican church for their homophobic stance.

Tutu was first diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1996.
