A memorial service was held yesterday at Simply Blue – a popular gay nightclub in Braamfontein – for Johannesburg drag artist Azu Udogu, after she died last week.

Udogu, a well-known entertainer within the gay community, passed away on 24 May as a result of kidney failure at Helen Joseph Hospital just several of days after her 32nd birthday on 18 May, reports Behind The Mask.

The Nigerian national who lived in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg achieved much as an individual in that she was a drag artist, a performer and the owner of Azu-Link travel agency.

Condolences have poured in from friends; describing her as sweet but tough when it came to her beliefs. “Anita was a sister I never had… a positive motivating force in my life and she made my life complete,” said one friend.

Udogu will be remembered by friends for her carefree attitude and jokes.
