PREGNANT MAN ON OPRAH

Thomas Beatie, the controversial pregnant trans-man from Oregon, has appeared on the Oprah Winfrey show with his wife and her children.

Thirty four year old Beatie was born a woman, but began to live as a man 10 years ago. He had his breasts removed and began testosterone treatments, although he retained his female reproductive organs. He is legally recognised as a man.

Recently, Beatie stopped taking the hormones in order to fall pregnant. The pregnancy was confirmed by his obstetrician who described it to Winfrey as “normal” and said that the baby is healthy.

Beatie told Winfrey that he had always wanted to have children: “It’s not a male or female desire to have a child. It’s a human desire.”

He said that he had kept his reproductive organs because he planned to one day have a child.

Beatie’s wife Nancy, who has two adult daughters from a previous marriage, explained that she inseminated her husband with a syringe using sperm from a sperm bank.

Her two daughters described the couple as “regular” and “very much in love.”

The lightly bearded Beatie said that the pregnancy did not change his gender identity in any way and that he still considered himself to be a man. “I have a very stable male identity,” he told Winfrey.

“He’s going to be the father and I’m going to be the mother,” said Nancy.

The couple said that they decided to go public with the pregnancy in an attempt to control how the news was revealed by the media.

Earlier this week, US talk show host David Letterman referred to Beatie as an “androgynous freak show.”
