DUBAI TARGETS GAY CRUISING

Tourists have been warned that Police in Dubai will be cracking down on gay cruising on public beaches.

The Muslim emirate’s police officials have announced that the force has created an undercover unit which will be focus on tackling gay and “indecent activities” on local beaches.

According to the Al-Emarat al-Youm newspaper, the move comes after complaints of illicit nighttimes activities.

The unit will comprise plainclothes officers who will patrol the beaches. Officials have also encouraged the public to report any offensive acts that they may come across.

Last year, 641 people were caught engaging in indecent activities on beaches, which are popular tourist attractions.

Gay sex is illegal in Dubai, and can result in up to 10 years imprisonment.

In 2005, 12 men were arrested for homosexuality during a police raid on a private party and received jail sentences of five years.
