GAY MAN BECOMES MAYOR OF US CITY

Advertorial

Portland, Oregon has become the largest US city to boast an openly gay man at its helm.

Sam Adams, a 45 year old former Portland city commissioner, was last night sworn in to office as mayor of around 600,000 people.

The private city hall ceremony made Adams the only openly gay mayor of a top 30 US city. He will be sworn in again in a public event on Monday.

Adams won 58 percent of the vote in a May election. His sexuality was not raised as an issue during the campaign.

“I don’t want to be a gay mayor. I do want to be a great mayor. There is no gay pothole and no straight pothole. They’re just potholes,” he was quoted as saying during his run for office.

His partner, Peter Zuckerman, is a reporter at The Oregonian newspaper.
