HILLARY: US TO DEFEND GAY RIGHTS
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said that fighting LGBT oppression around the world is important to the US government.
Clinton made the comment at a ‘question and answer’ event with young Europeans in Brussels last week.
She spotted a young man in the crowd wearing a t-shirt emblazoned with the words “I love Hillary” and asked if he had a question.
The man, who said that he was a Moldavian gay rights activist, asked her about LGBT rights.
Clinton responded by saying: “Human rights is and always will be one of the pillars of our foreign policy. In particular, persecution and discrimination against gays and lesbians is something we take very seriously.”
She added, “I can only hope that we all live long enough to see the end to this kind of discriminatory treatment and recognition that human rights are the inalienable rights of every person no matter who that person loves.”
Her answer was met with generous applause from the audience.
