PERU BANS GAY POLICE

Advertorial

New regulations planned by Peruvian Interior Minister, Mercedes Cabanillas, will ensure that any police officer who has sexual relations with someone of the same gender will be indefinitely suspended from the police force.

She says that she is trying to improve the image of the police, which has a dismal reputation among the general public. According to Cabanillas, homosexuality damages the image of the institution. The same law will also ban officers who have extra-marital relations.

The measures, which critics say are unconstitutional, will also lead to the firing of those who “organise, promote, participate or incite strikes, stoppages or marches.”

Cabanillas has earned the nickname “Thatcher”, after the former Conservative British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, due to her strong-arm tactics.
