The late Stephen Gately

Boyzone singer Stephen Gately was laid to rest in Dublin on Saturday at an emotional ceremony attended by friends, family and celebrities.

Over 3000 people gathered outside St Laurence O’Toole’s Church where the funeral was held for the 33 year old openly gay singer who died of natural causes while on holiday in Majorca.

“We have lost our brother and I’ve lost my wing man. He will live on in our songs and whenever us four are together, his spirit is alive,” said Boyzone band mate Ronan Keating, who struggled to contain his emotions.

“For Stephen, we’ll carry on, but it will never be the same without him. A beautiful man who is now the perfect angel. Forever young and never forgotten,” he said.

The four remaining members of Boyzone – Keating, Keith Duffy, Mikey Graham and Shane Lynch – performed two songs in the church during the ceremony.

Gately’s parents, siblings and his husband Andrew Cowles (32) attended the memorial, along with stars such as Jason Donovan and Elton John’s partner, David Furnish. It was Furnish who introduced Gately to Cowles.

Gately’s body was later cremated at a private ceremony. It is believed that Cowles returned to the couple’s London home with the ashes.
