ACTRESS LEFT CATHOLICISM AFTER BROTHER CAME OUT

Advertorial

The Devil Wears Prada actress Anne Hathaway has revealed that her family abandoned Catholicism over its stance on gays and lesbians.

The 27 year old star, who also appeared in Brokeback Mountain as rodeo princess Lureen Newsome, made the comment in an interview published in the March issue of GQ magazine.

“The whole family converted to Episcopalianism after my elder brother came out” she told the magazine. “Why should I support an organisation that has a limited view of my beloved brother?”

She added that she still wasn’t sure of her current religious standing: “So I’m… nothing (no denomination). Fuck it, I’m forming. I’m a work in progress.”

Hathaway, who was nominated in 2008 for an Oscar for Best Actress, has previously said that she wanted to become a nun when she was younger.

The Catholic Church opposes the ordination of openly gay clergy and actively lobbies around the world against the legalisation of same-sex marriage.
