A Pietermaritzburg LGBT organisation’s drama group has been selected to perform at the South African National Community Theatre Association’s festival later this month.

The Gay & Lesbian Network’s Thespian Club developed a script called the ‘Pink Mynah Support Group’ that qualified to be performed at the festival, taking place on 24 to 27 June at the Johannes Stegman Theatre in Secunda.

The drama group has received mentoring and support through skills workshops in preparation for the event.

The cast members were taught warm up exercises, graphic mime, story creating, team building and received input and recommendations.

The mentoring was provided by Daisy Spencer who is qualified in the area of drama and has choreographed and directed a number of drama and dance performances in Durban.

The drama group is part of the Safe Spaces programme which aims to create safe spaces and awareness of gay and lesbian issues through various activities, including drama.

Vernon Moodley-Safe Space Coordinator of the Gay & Lesbian Network said: “The drama group has grown since they started out and show great potential of furthering drama as a career. We would like to wish them all the success for the festival. We would also like to thank the Arts & Culture Department, KZN for funding the drama group which has made it possible for them to participate in the festival.”
