NAVRATILOVA’S $3 MILLION SETTLEMENT
Tennis legend Martina Navratilova, who revealed earlier this year that she was diagnosed with breast cancer, has settled a bitter lawsuit with a former partner of eight years with an estimated $3 million payout.
Navratilova has been accused of hypocrisy by claiming in court that her partnership to Toni Layton was not legal under the law and thus Layton shouldn’t be entitled to a share of her fortune.
Layton, who left her husband – Navratilova’s accountant – for the sports star, had sued Navratilova for “emotional, mental and physical trauma” claiming that Navratilova abruptly broke up with her and changed the locks on their home.
“Without any warning, my life came crashing down around me. I was kicked out on the streets with only the clothes on my back. I was left an emotional wreck, with nothing to show for eight years of my life,” said Layton at the time.
After a two year legal battle, the parties finally settled this week. “All of the disputes between the parties have been resolved,” said Layton’s lawyer, adding that “the terms are confidential.”
In 1991, Navratilova paid out a rumoured $3.5 million to former lover Judy Nelson, also after an eight year relationship.
Navratilova recently completed cancer radiation treatment and has announced that she is now cancer free.
