A man had been beaten in an apparent homophobic attack in the toilets of the landmark Stonewall Inn in New York City.

The Stonewall Inn was the site of the historic 1969 Stonewall Riots and is recognised as the birthplace of the gay rights movement.

According to reports, 34-year-old Benjamin Carver was approached by two men in the bathroom and asked if the venue was a gay bar and if he was a “faggot”. They then allegedly attacked him.

Carver fought back and along with his boyfriend managed to force the men out of the bar.

“To so many of these bullies, they think that gay people are an easy target, and that we’re just going to give in. Those two guys found out that night that’s not the case,” Carver told the New York Post.

Matthew Francis (21) and Christopher Orlando (17) have since been arrested in connection with the bashing and have been charged with a hate crime and attempted robbery.
