A government minister is concerned that Indian men will ‘turn gay’ because there are too few women being born in the country.
Farooq Abdullah, the minister for new and renewable energy, made the bizarre statement while commenting on India’s latest census figures that show that more men than woman are being born.
“The male sex is growing and women are getting eliminated. The day is not far when there will be no girls to marry and we’ll all become gays. That might happen,” he said on Wednesday while addressing the India Water Forum in New Delhi.
Officials said that while there were 927 female children aged 0-six years for every 1,000 male children of the same age in 2001, this has dropped to 914 females for every 1,000 males in 2011.
