A new logo for the Mr. Gay South Africa™ pageant has been chosen through a nationwide competition, in which more than 50 entries were received.

A design by Jaco Opperman from design firm Visual Candy was selected as the winning submission.

“The new logo was chosen as to be instantly recognisable as South African, seeing that the LGBTI eyes of the world will soon focus on South Africa with Mr. Gay World 2012 coming to Johannesburg,” said Director of Operations, Coenie Kukkuk.

He explained that the board of directors had consulted the LGBTI community through Facebook, e-mail and SMS voting on their favourite design, in which Opperman’s entry did very well.

The initial entry was then reworked following input from both the community and the board of directors and finally accepted in the current version.

John-Louis O’Neil, Logistics and Sponsors director, commented: “We had to take into account certain practical issues such as does the logo embroider well, does it stand out in a distance on a shirt, is it black and white print-friendly and more. The new logo does just that. It also displays the correct abbreviation, namely ‘Mr. GSA’.”

Visual Candy was also appointed “Official Designer Sponsor” of Mr. Gay South Africa.

A launch party for the Mr. Gay South Africa 2011 season and new logo will be held on Saturday 25 June 2011 at
