The ‘straight’ character in True Blood, the popular television vampire series, that will have a gay affair in the show’s new season has been revealed.

There had been much speculation as to which character would be involved in a same-sex romance in the anticipated fourth season of True Blood.

In Sunday’s season premiere in the US, the character was revealed as being none other than Tara Thornton (Rutina Wesley) who is now a cage fighter and sleeping with a woman named Naomi.

“When I first got the script, I thought it was great,” Wesley told Entertainment Weekly.

“They’ve always given me stuff that challenged me as an actor and that was fun. I think Tara — if she is going to have a love interest this season — she’s finally ready for it.”

The actress is adamant that audiences shouldn’t think that her character is now in a lesbian relationship because of her past bad luck with men.

“I hope that people can understand that. Because I know people, of course, are just going to go to the ‘Oh, they’re just doing that, because she had that relationship and all of a sudden she’s gay,’” she said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

“No, no, no, it’s not that. It’s just something that happened and she ended up being open to it, which I think is really cool.”

True Blood is considered to be one of the most gay-friendly drama series on US television, with a number of gay or bisexual characters. In March, the show received the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) Media Award for “Outstanding Drama Series”.
