PETITION FOR GAY MARRIAGE ON SESAME STREET
A petition calling on producers of children’s programme Sesame Street to marry the characters of Bert and Ernie has received almost 4,000 signatures.
In the show, Bert and Ernie – who share a room – aren’t identified as gay but many have speculated that they could be more than just good friends, despite denials by Sesame Street producers.
Now, American Lair Scott has started a petition titled ‘Let Bert & Ernie Get Married On Sesame Street‘, inspired by the growing support for same-sex marriage in the US.
“In this horrific age of LGBT kids taking their own lives, they need to know that they ARE BEAUTIFUL and their lives are worth living,” says Scott.
“We are not asking that Sesame Street do anything crude or disrespectful. Only that they allow Bert & Ernie to marry or even add a transgender character to the show. It can be done in a tasteful way.
“Let us teach tolerance of those that are different. Let Sesame Street and PBS Kids be a big part in saving many worthy lives,” concludes Scott in the introduction to the petition.
The petition’s Facebook page has seen a number of people, some openly homophobic, expressing their opposition to the idea.
“There is nothing gay about bert & ernie, there just two guys who share a room & enjoy each others company, it’s called friendship!! Why cant kids allowed to be kids anymore???” says Kevin Wilson.
And, Fron Deloop writes: “Should we show the kids how bert puts his fluffy puppet penis inside of Ernie’s poo hole? Maybe the kids will see how ‘normal’ that is. And then we can say, ‘it’s normal to be married to another man.'”
Do you think having Bert and Ernie marry on Sesame Street would help teach kids about tolerance and diversity?
