LESBIAN COUPLE ARRESTED AFTER TRYING TO GET MARRIED

Kathryn Cartledge and Elizabeth Eve are arrested

An American lesbian couple of 30 years has been arrested following a peaceful sit-in demonstration against the state of North Carolina’s ban on same-sex marriage.

The Rev. Kathryn Cartledge (65) – an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ – and Elizabeth Eve (66) were charged with second-degree trespassing.

The women, who were taking part in the Campaign for Southern Equality’s ‘We Do Campaign’, sat down on the floor of the Buncombe County Register of Deeds office and refused to leave after they were denied a marriage license for the second time.

The couple was arrested by officers and led away in handcuffs. The women were later released and will appear in court in December.

“I feel so hopeful”, Cartledge said after she was released, reported

“We’ve been together for 30 years. We’ve raised our families together: two daughters and four grandchildren. I think it’s important for us to do this work now to drive home that it’s not only time but to also teach our grandchildren that it’s okay to resist laws that treat you less than equal,” Cartledge said.
