The end of reality television star Kim Kardashian’s 72-day-old marriage is being touted by gays and lesbians the world over as an example of the hypocrisy of banning same-sex marriage.

Kardashian (31) announced on Monday that she had filed for divorce from her husband, basketball star Kris Humphries (26), just two and half months after they got hitched.

“After careful consideration, I have decided to end my marriage. I hope everyone understands this was not an easy decision,” she said in a statement.

“I had hoped this marriage was forever, but sometimes things don’t work out as planned. We remain friends and wish each other the best.”

The couple married in an elaborate multi-million dollar wedding which was turned into a two-part television special and that many have speculated was largely an arranged publicity stunt.

The issue at stake is that heterosexual people and celebrities are able to get married and get divorced after just 72 days or less (55 days in the case of Britney Spears) but gays and lesbians in decades-long relationships still cannot tie the knot in most parts of the world.

Now, celebrities and ordinary people alike have commented on the absurdity of religious leaders and anti-gay groups’ claims that the institution of marriage is being damaged by same-sex marriage rights.

“Kim Kardashian files for divorce after 72 days. Another example of how same-sex marriage is destroying the sanctity of the very institution,” commented openly-gay Star Trek star George Takei tongue-in-cheek on Twitter.

Gossip blogger Perez Hilton added: “Straight people do a damn well good job themselves of ruining the sanctity of marriage! #MarriageForAll.”

The marriage has also become the butt of many jokes on social network sites.

It is believed that Kardashian and Humphries made around $18 million in profit from their short-lived marriage.
