A professional Canadian soccer star has come out, saying that he regrets not being open about his sexuality sooner.

American-born David Testo, a midfielder who played for Montreal Impact until last month, revealed that he is gay in an interview with CBC’s Radio-Canada on Thursday.

“It’s hard, like living the life of a professional athlete and being gay is incredibly hard,” he said.

“It’s like carrying around a secret, you know, and carrying around luggage and just never being allowed to be yourself.”

Testo said that although his teammates, friends and family knew he was gay he struggled to come out to the public.

His added that his biggest regret was not being able to publicly thank his partner when he received the most valuable player award in 2009.

“The one person I wanted to thank the most, I couldn’t. I just didn’t feel comfortable at the time.”

Montreal Impact President Joey Saputo said in a statement that the club had known about Testo’s sexual orientation before he joined the team in 2007.

“During his career in Montreal he has always been a professional and dedicated player to this club on and off the field. His decision to go public must have been a difficult one and we respect it,” added Saputo.

Testo was released by Montreal on October 12th and it is unclear if he will continue to play professionally.
