Two men on a gay cruise have been arrested for having sex while the ship was docked at the Caribbean island of Dominica.

According to the Associated Press, the men were apparently spotted having sex from the dock and were arrested after police boarded the ship.

Robert Hart (41) and Dennis Jay Mayer (43) from California were charged with indecent exposure and sodomy.

Homosexuality is illegal in Dominica with penalties including 10 years in prison or internment in a mental asylum.

The ship, carrying around 2,000 passengers, continued with the cruise without the men, who are reported to still be in custody in the capital Roseau.

The cruise was organised by Atlantis Events, which specialises in gay travel, and held aboard the Celebrity Summit ship owned by Celebrity Cruises.

Atlantis Events President Rich Campbell told the AP that he was unconcerned about hosting gay cruises to countries that have anti-gay laws.

“Many countries and municipalities that gay men visit and live in have antiquated laws on their books. These statutes don’t pose a concern to us in planning a tourist visit.”

He said that the passengers should be released shortly and that the charges they faced were not significant.

According to the site Dominicanewsonline.com, the charges of sodomy have been dropped and the men will only be charged with indecent exposure.

“The guests’ actions were unfortunate but minor in this case and have no bearing on our overall guest experience,” Campbell added.

Neither Atlantis Events nor Celebrity Cruises have mentioned the event on their websites.
