U.S. comic retailers have placed massive advance orders for what is expected to be the first X-Men comic series to feature a gay superhero wedding.

Issue 50 of Astonishing X-Men, which is rumoured to see Northstar (Jean-Paul Beaubier) propose to his boyfriend Kyle, has hit the top of the advance orders chart.

The following issue, number 51, will depict the actual wedding between the two characters.

Their relationship has been strained in previous issues due to the fact that Kyle has no superpowers.

While publisher Marvel Comics has remained mum about the details of the wedding, it has begun planning wedding related events at comic stores across the U.S. in preparation for the big day.

“This will be an event that will have worldwide mass-media attention, driving customers to your stores. Because of the nature of the event and the promised mass media break, we cannot say who will be tying the knot, but we promise that it will send shockwaves throughout the nation,” Marvel told retailers.

Northstar became the first gay Marvel superhero when he came out in issue 106 of Alpha Flight in 1992.

The wedding follows in the footsteps of the recent sell-out comic nuptials of Archie characters Kevin Keller and his boyfriend Dr. Clay Walker.
