A lecturer at the Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, Nigeria has been arrested for allegedly sexually harassing a male student.

Dr. Gambo Abdul, who lectures in the department of public administration at the university, was described as being gay by the Leadership website.

According to the report, Abdul had over a period of two years allegedly made a number of sexual advances towards Abubakar Abdulkareem, who had apparently repeatedly rejected the attention.

When the student complained to his parents, the authorities urged him to “play along” with the lecturer to catch him ‘in the act’.

Abdulkareem agreed to meet Abdul at a local hotel and when the lecturer allegedly made advances towards the younger man he was arrested by police and taken to the Chanchaga police station.

Homosexuality is illegal in Nigeria with penalties of up to 14 years in prison. In some parts of the country the death penalty could be imposed under Sharia law.

It is unclear on exactly what Abdul is being charged with.
